In an existing four-floor building in Paleo Faliro, a change of use and conversion of an old cinema into office buildings is proposed. The present project has to manage an introverted volume with minimal openings, while keeping the main core and central circulation intact. In an attempt for openness and extroversion, the facades are formed on the basis of a grid on the traces of the supporting structure and clad with glazing. This gesture significantly changes the volume of the building, which is also altered by the replacement of parts of the roof with planted lower-lying roofs, and by the opening of an atrium in the center to provide better natural light inside. Thus, a structure is created, “fragmented” into many smaller sections that complement each other, following the configuration of the new levels and double-height auditoriums that are formed based on the existing inclined level of the cinema. The new ensemble provides for the removal of the circular design and the staircase that it incorporated and the creation of an open, cohesive but at points discontinuous composition, related to the outside.
